A severe storm has struck the U.S. East Coast, bringing heavy winds, snow and rain that led to canceled flights and widespread power outages. The nor’easter struck the coastal seaboard from Maine to Virginia this week, forcing Amtrak to suspend its Northeast Corridor train service. As of Friday, more than one million residences had lost power in the Northeast and Midwest. More than 2,600 flights have also been canceled and a control tower at Dulles International Airport was evacuated due to high winds, reports said. Parts of New York received more than a foot of snow on Thursday. Coastal communities in Boston, faced with extreme monthly high tides, have been told to prepare for evacuation as seawater poured into some streets. "People need to take this very seriously," Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said. - WAPO

An activist art collective known as INDECLINE claimed responsibility for vandalizing a Las Vegas billboard to read "Shoot a school kid only $29." The billboard advertisement for Battlefield Vegas, a local shooting range, previously read "Shoot a .50 caliber only $29." The alterations, made on Thursday, also included the phrase “Defend lives, reform laws" at the bottom left corner of the board. In a statement, the group said the "protest piece" is a response to the country's "longstanding obsession with gun culture" and the government’s "inability to honor the victims of mass shootings by distancing themselves from the homicidal policies of the NRA." A spokesperson said the group has received criticism as well as support and donations. INDECLINE is also known for displaying life-size naked statues of President Donald Trump in in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other U.S. cities. - USAT

Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Gymnastics over sexual abuse committed by former team doctor Larry Nassar. Nassar was recently sentenced to decades in prison for abusing dozens of women and girls. According to the lawsuit, Nassar allegedly abused Raisman, a six-time Olympic medalist, several times from 2010 to 2015. The suit alleges that the groups failed to properly monitor Nassar using the appropriate measures. In a statement, Raisman said it is "painfully clear" that both organizations "have no intention of properly addressing this problem." Officials with the organizations did not immediately comment on the allegations. - WAPO

Researchers uncovered a previously unknown supercolony of penguins in the Danger Islands. In all, more than 1.5 million penguins were counted. The survey revealed the third and fourth largest colonies of Adélie penguins in the world. Researchers conducted ground and computer automated counts using drone imagery of the islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. The drone flew close enough over the islands' surface for an algorithm to quickly tally each penguin individually. “As soon as we did the first run, it became very obvious that counting penguins this way was more efficient than anything else we’ve ever thought of,” said professor Hanumant Singh, who developed the drone’s navigation and imaging system. - NEWSWEEK
